Description

This Candy Cane Popcorn recipe combines the light crunch of air-popped popcorn with the sweet, creamy taste of white chocolate and the festive crunch of crushed candy canes. Perfect as a holiday treat or a sweet snack, this easy-to-make candy popcorn is a delightful mix of flavors and textures that's sure to please everyone at your celebration.

Ingredients

Scale

Popcorn Base

  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels

Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate wafers
  • 1/3 cup candy canes - crushed (about 4 regular sized candy canes)

Instructions

  1. Pop the Popcorn: Use an air popper to pop 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels until fully popped and fluffy. Transfer the popcorn to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Crush the Candy Canes: Place about 4 regular sized candy canes in a food processor or blender and pulse until finely crushed into small pieces.
  3. Melt the White Chocolate: Put 1 1/2 cups of white chocolate wafers into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat at half power in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
  4. Coat the Popcorn: Pour the melted white chocolate over the popped popcorn. Stir gently but thoroughly to ensure all the popcorn is coated evenly with the white chocolate.
  5. Add Crushed Candy Canes: Sprinkle the crushed candy canes over the coated popcorn and mix gently to distribute the candy cane pieces evenly throughout.
  6. Set the Popcorn: Let the popcorn sit at room temperature for about 1 hour to allow the white chocolate to set and harden.
  7. Store the Snack: Once set, store the Candy Cane Popcorn in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for up to 5-7 days, perfect for enjoying over the holiday season.

Notes

  • White chocolate chips can be used as a substitute for white chocolate wafers, but they may not be as white or melt as smoothly.
  • This recipe comes from my mother-in-law and is a beloved holiday treat in our family.
  • Ensure to stir the white chocolate thoroughly during melting to avoid burning.
  • For extra festive flair, consider adding a pinch of peppermint extract to the melted white chocolate before coating the popcorn.
