Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Cheese
- 6 slices bacon chopped
- 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Vegetables and Seasonings
- 1/2 cup onion finely diced
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Batter
- 1/2 cup baking mix such as Bisquick
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
Other
- cooking spray
- assorted toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9 inch deep dish pie pan or a regular 10 inch pie pan with cooking spray.
- Cook Bacon: Place a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the bacon and place on a paper towel to drain.
- Drain Bacon Grease: Drain all but 1 teaspoon of bacon grease from the pan, leaving the flavorful fat for cooking the beef.
- Cook Ground Beef and Onion: Add the ground beef and finely diced onion to the pan. Cook for 6-7 minutes, breaking up the beef with a spatula until browned and fully cooked.
- Season Meat: Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for an additional 1 minute to blend flavors.
- Add Bacon to Meat: Incorporate two-thirds of the cooked bacon back into the meat mixture, reserving the remaining bacon for garnish.
- Assemble Pie Base: Transfer the meat and bacon mixture to the prepared pie plate. Evenly sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
- Mix Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the baking mix, milk, and eggs until smooth.
- Combine and Bake: Pour the batter evenly over the meat and cheese in the pie plate. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Garnish and Serve: Top the baked pie with the remaining bacon and your choice of burger toppings like shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use 90% lean ground beef for good flavor without excessive grease; if using higher fat beef, drain excess grease before adding seasoning.
- This recipe is best suited for a 9 inch deep dish or a regular 10 inch pie pan to accommodate all the batter and fillings.
- Freshly grated cheddar cheese provides better melt and flavor compared to pre-shredded varieties.
